You can access the full library of Max (formerly HBO Max) at no extra cost if your cable, satellite, or internet plan includes HBO. Instead of paying for a separate subscription, you simply link your existing Provider account to the Max app.
This guide explains how to connect your provider using the max.com/providers activation page and start streaming immediately.
Verify Your Subscription First
Before you start, confirm your current TV or internet package includes HBO or Max. Many plans from Xfinity, Spectrum, DirectTV, AT&T, and Cox bundle this service automatically.
Locate your Username and Password for your provider account. You will need these credentials to verify your subscription during the setup process.
Connect Max on Your TV
The most common way to link a provider is directly through your smart TV or streaming device (like Roku, Fire TV, or Apple TV).
- Open the Max app on your TV.
- Select Sign In.
- Choose Connect Your Provider (sometimes labeled Sign in with a Provider).
- Stay on this screen. Your TV displays a unique 6-character Activation Code.
- On a computer or phone, go to max.com/providers .
- Enter the Activation Code from your TV screen into the web page.
- Search for your Provider in the list (e.g., “Spectrum” or “Hulu”).
- Log in with your Provider credentials.
Once verified, your TV screen automatically refreshes and logs you in.
Connect via Mobile or Web
If you want to watch on a phone, tablet, or computer, the process skips the code entry.
- Open the Max app or go to Max.com/signin.
- Select Sign in with a Provider.
- Choose your service Provider from the list.
- Enter your Provider login details.
- Complete the Create Account form if this is your first time signing in.
You now have full access to Max on that device.
Create Your Max Profile
After you sign in with your provider for the first time, Max asks you to create a Max Account. This step often confuses users, but it is necessary.
This action links your Provider subscription to a specific email address and creates a Max profile. You use this new Max email and password to sign in on other devices in the future, bypassing the provider selection step if you prefer.
Troubleshooting Connection Issues
If you cannot connect, check these common problems:
Provider Not Listed
Max does not support every small regional cable company. If you do not see your Provider in the list, your specific plan likely does not include Max access, or the provider has not reached a deal with Warner Bros. Discovery.
“Can’t Verify Subscription” Error
This error means your provider account works, but the specific package you pay for does not include HBO/Max.
- Log in to your provider’s portal (e.g., xfinity.com).
- Check your channel lineup to ensure HBO is active.
- If you recently upgraded, wait 24 hours for the system to update your permissions.
Stuck in a Login Loop
If the app keeps sending you back to the “Sign In” screen:
- Clear the cache on your browser or reinstall the Max app.
- Turn off your Wi-Fi on your phone and try connecting via cellular data.
- Use an “Incognito” or “Private” browser window to visit max.com/providers.

Managing Your Account
Once you connect, your billing goes through your Provider, not Max directly. You cannot cancel or change your plan inside the Max app. To make changes to your subscription or billing, you must contact your TV or internet provider directly.
You can, however, manage Profiles, Parental Controls, and Watch History directly within the Max app once you sign in.
